They hover beyond the fathomable; in the outer reaches of mind beyond and outside words. Mythology is a metaphor for our reality. And words can help clarify the tangible form that bubbles out from the subconscious. In poetry, like painting, one can attempt an explanation of that which does not easily cross the boundary between experience and explanation. Perhaps through art there can exist a bridge. A link to something unseen yet hovering just there; the thing unsaid that is still blossoming along the periphery. Perhaps it grows more vivid with every attempt at failed description. Here there is more to articulate in paint and more to be said. From this place of seeking, paintings are birthed as the unknowable and intangible is pushed, pulled, and coerced into form. When we make inner power visible, we can sometimes allow others to grow new eyes to see. Song of the Birches The birches sang of longing As the way I held to the path grew false, intangible In its dreamlike coating Time became corrupted the pace of my steps wove the pathway outward Into certainty When I left the forest I kept only the eyes watching And the song I sang back As reality was strung more vivid, More fantastic A seasonless winter In the webbing of mind How I Remember It, A Poem The forest pulled inward To funnel my senses Across parallel experiences Into a column of attention It held me entranced A vortex of heightened perception To stand witness As time became corrupted, trivial My previous life awash With a false overlay As the way I held to the path Grew intangible And the pace of my steps Wove a new future outward Into unyielding certainty A voice, blue as open sky Not a whisper, Nor command, but a well spring Spoke of a future that is known Held there In the reaching tapestry In the peeling bark In the ancient moss I am not watched nor watching I oil on panel, 10x8", 2019 (private collection) About Vision and Metaphor: A New American Epic There is a need for a new American and world mythology that resonates with our fullest desires in this life right now. A need to see ourselves and our children living wholly empowered and legitimately respected. A need to see real faces that reflect the diversity and truth of the future. I envision the metaphorical journey of children to a new future where all are safe with the recognition that we are all brilliantly reflected in the souls of each other. When I began these paintings I asked myself what I needed to create in the world right now. The ideas and visions flowed in and while I worked to bring them to life more questions came up: what does true equality really look like? What would the story look like if the traditionally invisible were included in our historical context? What would it be like to walk through an art museum and see paintings that reflected our inner truth, power, and knowing? What would my work look like if I gave thanks to the unseen daughters of history by paying tribute to the wise leaders among us who must one by one and in unison reveal the real truth? What is the truth when we dismantle the limiting boxes and categories that cage us in? And where can true freedom exist if we don't allow openness, respect and understanding even for ourselves? I see a fresh future that is pushed into betterment by all hands on deck. I see new stories, new norms, and new leaders all around me. We are already moving swiftly over the water if we could just grab the oars and herald the young taking control of the boat. The oil paintings in this series and in The Great Crossing describe a New American Epic about the power and resilience of girls, lost youth, and children moving against the tide on their way to becoming future leaders. Each painting commemorates a moment in a greater narrative that highlights the inner strength, hope, diversity, and struggle of girls reclaiming their power. As part of this poetic and imagined nautical journey, children are depicted breaking free of limitations and using their own strength and skill to make their way at sea. I depict them in pivotal moments of challenge, despair, or enlightenment. feminist thinker and figurative artist who has exhibited in solo and group shows at galleries across the United States including Jim Kempner Fine Art (New York, NY), Curtis Gallery (New Canaan, CT), Skotia Gallery (Santa Fe, NM), Thinkspace (Los Angeles, CA), Arcilesi Homberg Fine Art (New York, NY), and Dedee Shattuck Gallery (Westport, MA). Her work has been featured in publications including The Wall Street Journal, American Art Collector Magazine, Studio Visit Magazine, and Juxtapoz. In early 2020 she was a guest lecturer and visiting artist at Brooklyn College as part of the GASU visiting artist program.&nbsp;Alain received her BFA in Studio Art from Hartford Art School in 2001 and her MA and MFA in Painting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008. She studied painting at the Marchutz School in Aix-en-Provence, France in 1999-2000 and was a resident at Vermont Studio Center in 2007. Alain lives in Brooklyn, NY where she paints archetypes of inner power for a new world, writes poetry, receives visions, and conjures imagery from the deep well of divine feminine intelligence. Statement From The Curators of Katelyn AlainVision and Metaphor: A New American Epic Steeped in the academic tradition of painting, but with a unique contemporary perspective, Alain draws from the compositional structure, historical motifs, and virtuosic brushwork of master painters across a diverse range of genres. Referencing these artists and other contemporary images to equate visual context with well known history paintings Alain upends a tradition that glorifies and romanticizes the male figure and gaze. Painted in a palette of rich hues to deep blacks and browns, Alain’s works are centered on portraiture within an abstracted dreamscape, built with layers of vibrating oil paint. Her loose and tight gestures obscure and deconstruct a singular reading as the work actively describes the distortion of memory and the way the brain alters information and experiences over time. A need to see ourselves and our children living wholly empowered and legitimately respected. A need to see real faces that reflect the truth the subconscious is already aware of. The recognition that we are all brilliantly reflected in the souls of others.When I began these paintings I asked myself what I needed to create in the world right now. The ideas and visions flowed in and while I worked to bring them to life more questions came up: what does true equality really look like? What would the story look like if the traditionally invisible were included in our historical context? What would it be like to walk through an art museum and see paintings that reflected our truth, power, and knowing? What would my work look like if I gave thanks to the unseen daughters of history by paying tribute to the wise leaders among us who must one by one and in unison reveal the real truth? What is the truth when we dismantle the limiting boxes and categories that cage us in? And where can true freedom exist if we don't allow openness, respect and understanding even for ourselves?I see a fresh future that is pushed into betterment by all hands on deck. I see new stories, new norms, and new leaders all around me. We are already moving swiftly over the water if we could just grab the oars and herald the young taking control of the boat. Artist Statement 2025 The girls in my paintings are inspired by the voices that have been silenced in the past and girls I witness speaking truth to power now - the diverse heroines, archetypes, and leaders of a vital new future. I distill current events, personal experiences and a feminist framework into a contemporary mythology of girls navigating the world with their inner power made visible. These children are conduits of divine feminine power existing in a metaphoric dreamscape beyond gender, expectation and the male gaze. Combining traditional oil painting techniques with abstractions from a rich inner experience, my life-sized characters are painted to be in contrast and conversation with romanticized history paintings in our institutions. Paintings have been used to uphold an American mythology steeped in the hierarchies and constructs of colonial patriarchy. But what is our shifting story now and what can we all honor and be proud of?
